Channel 4's Dispatches this week investigated the medicalisation of distress in young people and the rise in anti-depressant use. Featuring prominent clinicians such as Lucy Johnstone, who advocates for a re-think on the framework and prominence of Psychiatric Diagnosis in the field of Mental Health, the programme also follows the stories of those who are suffering and struggling to access the support they need.
A useful reminder of the importance of asking not "what's wrong with you" but considering "what's happened to you" to better understand, contextualise and de-shame emotional distress.
A timely and insightful programme, and one which echoes themes in Compassion Focused (CFT) understanding of human suffering.
